TARAWA, 06 September 2011 – The government owned television, Television Kiribati Limited will, for the first time, televise a one hour live campaign program for candidates vying for this coming general election.
The program will enable potential candidates on the island capital of Tarawa to voice their political platforms and draw as many supporters as they can before the election takes place in October this year.
Although, registration date for interested candidates has not been finalized, it is likely that the current parliamentarians from South Tarawa and Betio constituencies would run in this coming election.
One of the potential candidates, a former president and current parliamentarian from South Tarawa, Mr. Teburoro Tito, will be amongst those to be interviewed in this program.
The live program which is to be aired daily starting from Monday next week will be on for a month.
The program will include a face to face interview and phone in questions from the general public.
An experienced local journalist has been appointed to host the program and interested candidates have been notified of the terms and conditions of the live campaign program this week.
Television Kiribati Limited says candidates from outer islands have also been invited to join in the televised campaign. However, television service is only accessible on Tarawa.
TKL also says the program would provide candidates the opportunity to spread their messages to their supporters and new electors.
The candidates will pay a reasonable fee to cover the cost of the program, but TKL says sponsorship will also be sought from local businesses and individuals.
Television Kiribati Limited says it will also host a similar program for the presidential campaign.
